Urban beaches in Barcelona are great and the Spanish metropolis has it all. A weekend in Barcelona really is a special experience – you can combine a big city break and a beach holiday, in a relaxed manner and at your own pace.
Imagine dropping your shopping bags in the middle of the city, get into your bikini and jump into the sea. After you’ve got some salt and sand in your hair, sit down at a nice tapas bar on the beach and sip a refreshing sangria. That is Barcelona, in a nutshell.
With more than 4 million people living in it, Barcelona is one of Europe’s most densely populated city.
Tip: Get off the main commercial streets and walk around the city’s various neighborhoods. Wander down the little streets and discover charming little shops, outlets, cafés and restaurants.
The promenade is magnificent – enjoy a fresh seafood meal in one of the many local restaurants.
Tip: Visit the marina for a well deserved break from the crowds – a quiet ocean view, the harbor and its boats are a great way to relax and catch the spirit of the city.
Sitting in the beach bar or restaurant calls for a tapas tasting! Don’t be afraid to try a bit of everything – food is relatively inexpensive and with great quality. If you are traveling in a group, everyone choose two or three different dishes each, and share them.
Tip: To complement your tapas fiesta, order a pitcher of chilled sangria – red wine with diced fruit, fizzy water, spices and ice.
Barcelona is a shopping mecca. Besides all the wonderful shops located in the smaller streets, there is Las Ramblas. It rests on the marina and the focus is on the big chains.
Tip: Down by the harbor lies a classic farmer’s market where the stands sell everything from cheap souvenirs to expensive jewelry.
Accommodation can make or break your holiday! One of the best districts to stay in is Eixample – it is completely surrounded by the other districts, and is one of the largest. It’s very beautiful and is relatively quiet, but still very cozy and full of little bistros, pubs and breakfast cafes.
Tip: Hotels can get very expensive in the peak season. Try a little different break and rent a city apartment – for the same or less price, you’ll get more space and more comfort.
