Valletta

Malta’s capital is Valletta, a city that was built during the rule of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem in the 16th century. Today Valletta is like an open air museum. Many historical, archaeological and  architectural monuments are found within city walls. Valletta is great for walking - the city is almost fully pedestrian.

Mdina

Mdina or The Silent City is ancient city with the history of at least 4000 years. It is situated in the centre of the island  and is famous for offering a breathtaking view of the island. It’s worth to visit The Cathedral and the town square which is the only open space within this tiny city.

Regions of Malta

Malta is divided into 5 regions without administrative function. Malta consists of the 3 main islands of Malta, Gozo and  Comino and many uninhabited islands like Cominotto, Selmunett, and Filfla. 

• Malta - is the main island, that has neither mountains, nor rivers. The coastline is 137 km long and is characterized by sandy beaches, natural harbours and bays, rocky coves. 

• Gozo - is Malta’s sister island. It is smaller and has a different character. The countryside is more spectacular with stunning cliffs and green valleys. The capital of Gozo is Rabat.
• Comino - is the smallest of the 3 islands. If you want to get away from it all, it is the place to go. It has no cars and absolutely nothing can disturb your tranquility.

Cuisine and wine of Malta

Maltese cuisine is a mixture of Mediterranean, Sicilian and African cuisines. It is based on seasonal produce and the fisherman’s catch. The most popular Maltese dishes are made of local puff pastry stuffed with vegetables, fish, meet and cheese. Lampuki Pie is probably the most famous Maltese dish and is worth to try. The island of Gozo is famous for its baked pumpkin pie with rice and basil. 

Maltese wine is not as popular as Italian or French, but there are some that are good and competitive. Malta produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache, Syrah, Chardonnay, etc. Traditionally Maltese sorts of wine are Gellewza and Ghirghentina.

When to go

The best time for visiting Malta is spring and autumn. The weather is pleasantly warm but not too hot. It is also easier to find cheaper accommodation and a good spot on the beach. Swimming season is between May and October, the rest of the year one can enjoy the beautiful countryside and towns of Malta. One of the best ways to explore countryside is to rent a beautiful and comfortable holiday home or a villa. Apart from the convenience and space, it will give you a unique chance to feel more like a local when on holiday.
